Hi,
With the new year fast approaching, those only too common thoughts are once more springing to mind. The feelings of guilt of another year wasted. Another year where I have made no serious attempt to better myself in any significant way. However, saying that I did manage an entire year without watching a single episode of: I'm a celebrity, Big Brother, Strictly Come Dancing, X-factor, Britain's got talent or dancing on ice or whatever that tripe is called. I think this is a monumental achievement worthy of praise.
I am finding the above rather depressing and I think it is time that I started to put these blue thoughts behind me and start a new hobby. That hobby being 'blogging'.
So, with this in mind I have decided that I will return to an old habit I had in Australia. This habit was simple really. I would set myself a different challenge each week or each month. The challenges can vary from the very serious to the down rite silly. Moreover, they will be suggested by my friends, family and other readers and I will try to fulfill as many as I can. Each month will herald the beginning of a new challenge or even set of challenges.
I am hoping this blogging experiment will be good fun. However, this certainly doesn't mean that I want it all to be easy. I want to push myself at times. Quitting smoking will, I'm sure be included in this and weight loss is a must. Both of which will be difficult mountains to climb.
I do face a problem before I even start. The problem being that I am not very good at compromise. I'm very much a one way or the other kind of man. For example, I like dressing smart, I enjoy very much donning casual attire. However, the very concept of smart casual bewilders and annoys me. it is surly one or the other?
Also, Why play a sport if you don't want to win? Few things annoy me as much as that little beauty. Turn up to a tennis court, badminton court etc etc just to hit the ball back in an "I'm not bothered fashion" Hit it back to beat me! Oh lord, that one gets me! Why pay to do something when you have no intention to actually compete to win. My blood boils at the very thought of this and as a result I am now going to move on.
In short, you can probably imagine that the sort of challenges which I will be setting myself will be based around the idea of "one extreme or the other"
My first challenge will be two fold. First I will challenge the idea of new year resolutions. Everybody seems to take on around about 450,000 new year resolutions each December/January and they tend to be forgotten about the very second somebody offers them a cigarette, slice of cake so on so forth. With this in mind I am to set myself a good few resolutions:
1- No drinking lager - It is just too bad for a person, makes you gain weight at an horrendous rate and tends to taste like carbonated water. I have drank gallons of the stuff over the years because it is an easy option when your at the bar. You can hardly order a red wine when you are in the pub with all of the "lads". It simply isn't the done thing! Or so I have always believed. Well, This is to be stopped! limiting oneself to a drink that isn't even considered nice, is at best frustrating. So it is to be eliminated from my life.
2- Quit Smoking - A classic!
3- No more bread. As Scott Pilgrim knows only too well, bread makes you fat.

3- No more bread. As Scott Pilgrim knows only too well, bread makes you fat.
4- Lose weight by any means necessary.
5- Start playing a sport, any sport at least one time a week. Again a classic
6- Take more photographs - I have an array of cameras. It is time to start using them more.
With all of those going on, I will also be starting my monthly challenges:
The Empire Challenge:
Idea suggested by Jem Marshall - To watch empire magazines top 100 movies in order 100-1 in January and review each one in a brief manner. Its going to be a filmfest! It works out as a lot of screen time each day and I will have to make up the numbers over the weekends. However, I am confident that this can be done. More over, I am looking forward to the opportunity to watch films like apocalypse now, that I have never for one reason or another managed to sit down and watch. Now I have no excuse to not watch these cinematic gems.
No Booze
No brainer really. After the over indulgence this is good for health, mind and wallet.
The first challenge(s) will begin on the 1st January and the ideas have already started coming in for February. Whilst I deal with the challenges I will also be 'blogging' what goes on in my mind as I feel this is at the heart of any good blog.
For now, that is all, I hope you enjoy :)
